ESG & EBI: two major secular shifts in global investing
Posted by Robin Powell on October 2, 2017
There are two huge developments taking place in global asset management.
One, of course, is the move towards basing investment decisions on independent and peer-reviewed academic evidence rather than opinions. The second is the growth of sustainable (or ESG) investing, in other words, focussing not only on investment returns, but also on making a positive difference — social, environmental or otherwise.
These aren’t, as some have suggested, cyclical trends or passing fads. They are major, secular shifts which will radically transform the entire investing industry. Although, thus far, I have focussed my attentions on one of these developments, evidence-based investing, I’m actually a big fan of both.
That’s why I’m particularly looking forward to what Dan Lefkovitz has to his say in his keynote address at Inside ETFs Europe in London. Dan is expert in both EBI and sustainable (ESG) investing and, in particular, in how sustainable strategies can be incorporated into an indexing approach.
As part of our sponsorship of the event, my company Ember Regis Group Ltd. is producing a series of videos with some of the keynote speakers. In our latest video, Dan Lefkovitz and John Swolfs from Inside ETFs explore the following issues:
— What exactly is sustainable investing?
— How do we know that it’s here to stay?
— What sort of additional risk, if any, is entailed?
— Does investing sustainably mean having to settle for lower returns?
